Objective: Act 1, Scene 1 The beginning of the play is set on the farm at twilight in May. The playwright describes the rolling hills with freshly plowed fields, with the sunset as the backdrop. It is a scene of beauty which has a deep influence on the characters. This lesson will explore the importance of setting in Act I, Scene I.

1) Class Discussion: Robert sits on a fence by a country road staring into the distant horizon while the sun sets. His brother Andrew joins him, and the beauty of these natural surroundings becomes an important part of their conversation. Discuss with the class the season, time and place in which the drama begins. What details describe the location? Does the class get a good picture of the setting? What is Robert's response to the setting? What does Andrew say about the natural surroundings?
