Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1-3)

Objective

Chapters One through Three

The objective of this lesson is to give students a short introduction to the author and the novel, examining how an author's history affects his/her writing. Students will also look briefly at world events in the 1950s, when the novel begins, as a way to help them place the story.

Lesson

1. Teacher Lecture/Class Discussion: Give students a brief biography of the author, Kate Atkinson, and tell them when the novel was published (1995). Have students take notes. For class discussion: How would Atkinson's upbringing affect what she might write about? How would the time period in which she was raised? The place? Her education? How big an impact do you think an author's personal history has on their work? Why?

2. Partner Work: Set up a T-chart, with one column labeled "1950s Culture" and the other "Description." Down the left hand column...
