Objective
The objective of this lesson is to explore the writing technique in media res and how it is used in Atmosphere. In media res is a narrative technique that starts a story at a pivotal point or situation. In this book, Reid opens with a crisis on a shuttle, and then takes readers back through events that led to the crisis.

Class Discussion: How does Reid immediately draw readers into the story as the novel begins? How does the author use flashbacks to connect the crisis to past experiences? How are the flashbacks used to tell what happened before the shuttle crisis? Are other literary devices used to relate information about the past? How is in media res used effectively on pages 3-68 of Atmosphere?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group discuss whether starting the story with the shuttle crisis creates...
