The first chapter introduces us to Herzog and also to his writing style for this book. This lesson discusses Herzog's writing, and how it reveals his style and temperament.

Lesson

1. Class Reading: Read the first few paragraphs, and analyze the writing style. How did Herzog write? What kind of words did he use? How were his sentences structured?

2. Small Group Discussion: Ask students to work together in small groups to characterize Herzog's style. How did Herzog establish cadence in his sentences? When or how did he vary from that cadence ? What did he lay emphasis on when he varied from his typical sentences? Ask each group to report back to the class after some time for discussion.
