Objective

And They Didn't Die opens with the protagonist Jezile desiring a child. Her mother-in-law MaBiyela disrespects her for not becoming pregnant once in three years of marriage. Jezile is determined to have a child. Part of the problem is that her husband Siyalo is rarely home. He works in the city of Durban which is far away and is forced to live there most of the year. During his few days of visitation, Jezile tries her best to become pregnant. Siyalo himself admits that he needs a child to help cement his home life and help him resist the temptations of the city. The objective of this lesson is to analyze Jezile.
