Chapter 1:

· As the novel begins, Kyle Lafferty stands in the bathroom during his high school graduation party and considers the charm bracelet he purchased for his girlfriend, Kimberly.

· Kyle hopes the bracelet will be able to fix the problems he and Kim have been having in their relationship; he describes the bracelet as “solid and sturdy, just like our relationship … most of the time” (1).

· Kyle has specially chosen the six charms to represent important moments in their lives together; he has even allowed for open links where future moments can be memorialized.

· Wanting to give her the bracelet, Kyle leaves the bathroom in search of Kim.

· Walking through the party, Kyle notices the social groups that once divided his graduating class have dissolved, and everyone mingles...
