1. What was the main reason for Rick writing this memoir?

The main reason that Rick wrote the memoir was to show his mother that she was not a failure. He knows that she blames herself for the tough life that her sons led. He sees her as a hero, and he wants her to know it. He also wants to give his father a chance to answer for himself even though he is dead.

2. What were the times like when Rick grew up? Where was he born? When?

Rick was born in northeastern Alabama. He was raised in the time when blacks and whites found reason to hate each other. He grew up near the cotton fields in the 1960s.

3. Why does Rick say that anyone could write this book? Is that true?

Rick states that anyone could write this book, but then he qualifies the anyone. Anyone who had a self-sacrificing mother. Anyone who stood with baby on hip without food to give it. Anyone who had a father who went to war and came back ruined. No, not anyone could tell this story, but it could be the story of many.
