Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Flowers's descriptions of Margot's past, especially as it concerns Luke, Rebecca, and her own parents Adam and Bethany. Early in Part I, Flowers clues readers in to the fact that Margot's parents were neglectful of her and that her uncle and aunt Luke and Rebecca were more like parents to her than her own parents ever were. Flowers's descriptions of Margot's parents also sets the reader's expectation for people who present one face to outsiders while they are actually completely different privately.

Class Discussion: Who are Luke and Rebecca? What is Margot's relationship with her aunt and uncle? What is her relationship with her own parents like? How do people in Wakarusa remember Margot's parents, and how does she herself remember them? Why is this difference important?
