Florence Wechek is the Western Union manager in Fort Repose, Florida. She wakes up one early December Friday morning at her usual 6:30 AM. Florence shares her home with pets that also begin to stir in the gray dawn. A large yellow cat named Sir Percy comes from behind the water heater. African lovebirds, Anthony and Cleo, swing in their cage and a squirrel outside runs down the limb of a grapefruit tree. She feeds the birds and cat in the kitchen and the aquarium fish in the living room. Florence is an organized woman whose daily routine does not vary. She sits down at seven to breakfast of orange juice and eggs while watching the morning show news from Tampa
