· Khalifa’s mother was a countrywoman, and Khalifa’s father met her when he was working on the farm of a big Indian landowner.

· Khalifa’s father’s name was Qassim, and he was born in a small village in Gujarat, India.

· His father was a tax collector and Qassim went to school.

· He won a scholarship to an English-medium school in Bombay.

· After school, he was offered a job on a landowner’s bookkeeping team on the east coast of Africa.

· He sent money home, but never returned to Gujarat.
