• Adam Bede is a nineteenth-century novel by George Eliot (pen name of Mary Ann Evans). It was published posthumously in 1859.

• The novel is comprised of six books, each with several chapters, as well as an Epilogue.

• The story is related from the perspective of a third-person narrator, describing events that begin on June 18, 1799 in the village of Hayslope in the northern English countryside. The narrator also steps outside of the action of the story on a number of occasions to describe and discuss the motivations and perspectives of her characters.

• In Chapter 1, the narrator describes five workmen at the workshop of carpenter and builder Jonathan Burge.

• Among these workers are Adam Bede and his younger brother...
