Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1, Warriors in the Mist)

Objective

Ursula LeGuin is a famous feminist science fiction and fantasy writer.

The aim of this lesson is to introduce Ursula LeGuin as a person and author.

Lesson

1) Begin the lesson by asking the students if they know anything about LeGuin. If no one volunteers any information, give a brief overview of her life, writing the information on the board. Divide the students into pairs and assign them an aspect of LeGuin's life to research and ask them to write a fact sheet. On their return. photocopy the fact sheets and hand them out. Finish the lesson by discussing, from what they already know of the author, what the book might be about.
