Shirin's parents have no sympathy for her problems or struggles at school. When she used to tell them about someone being mean to her. Her parents would tell her the stories of their youth. She quit telling them about her struggles as school, because it was not possible to compete for sympathy with a mother and father who thought she was lucky to attend a school where the teachers only said mean things and did not "actually beat the shit out of you" (13).
