Lesson 1 (from Part I (Prologue - Chapter 4))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Brystal Evergreen's relationship with her mother, Mrs. Evergreen, in Part I. At times Brystal feels that her mother does not understand her, and her mother does take Brystal's books away and encourage Brystal to play by all the rules of society. But Brystal's mother also tries to lessen the impact of Brystal's father's cruelty, and she seems to want a better life for her daughter.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Who is Brystal Lynn Evergreen? What kind of family life does she have? What would you say Brystal's relationship with her mother, Mrs. Evergreen, is like? What do they have in common? How does Mrs. Evergreen help Brystal, and vice versa?

Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and make a table titled "Brystal and Mrs. Evergreen." Ask students to divide the table into two sections...
