Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:
Essay Topic 1
The first time one reads Annie's novel, much of the imagery included in Section 2 is difficult to understand. It seems on first read like just a bunch of unconnected nonsense. After one reads the book in its entirety, however, the wanderings of Annie's mind begin to make more sense. Select a section of the second section of this book and try to interpret its meaning based on information given in the end of the book. Be sure to investigate devices such as imagery, symbolism and foreshadowing.
Essay Topic 2
Goodbyes and the effect these goodbyes can have on people is a major theme of Annie's novel. Ben struggles with his abandonment by both his birth mother and his first set of foster parents. Annie, meanwhile, is devastated by her father's suicide and her parents' disappearance when she was a small child in the hospital as well as an abandonment by her therapist, Melanie. Discuss the way in which Annie builds upon her own lost relationships in order to make her parting with Ben as painless for Ben as possible. Discuss also Annie's hurt from her own badly ended relationship with her therapist. In what ways does Blumenfeld help Annie to heal from this traumatic ending?
Essay Topic 3
Consider Annie's relationship with Melanie. Do you believe that Annie really wanted to kill Melanie? Why or why not? Was Annie, as Blumenfeld suggested, trying to heal Melanie? Defend your answer with examples from the book. Do you believe that Melanie really never knew Annie, or did she change during their time together? Do you agree with Blumenfeld's description of Melanie's departure as not being a goodbye, but just leaving?
