Objective

Chapter 1, The Rescue

The chapter begins in March of 1973, while Dave is trying to hurry to finish the dishes so that he can get something to eat. The objective of this lesson is to look closely at the situation introduced in the beginning paragraphs and understand the abuse with which Dave is dealing.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Begin the lesson with a class discussion about child abuse to prepare the students for what they are about to read in this chapter. Some students may have personal experience with abuse while others may only have a vague idea about the reality of child abuse. Ask for the students' reactions as they read the first few pages of the book.
