Only the Democratic-Republican Party was represented in this election; different factions of that party nominated different candidates. When no candidate received a majority of electoral votes, it became the responsibility of the House of Representatives to elect a president. Clay's supporters largely threw their support to Adams, which helped elect Adams president. John C. Calhoun received the most votes as a vice presidential nominee. This was also the first election where popular votes were counted.
