Appropriations: Funds authorized for a particular project.

Civil service: Positions under the authority of the federal government.

Election board: A group authorized to operate elections and count votes.

Pacifist: A person opposed to conflict.

Reconstruction: A federal policy from 1865 to 1877. During this time, the national government took an active part in assisting and policing the former Confederate states following the Civil War (1861-65).

Tariff: A tax placed on imported goods to raise their price and make them less attractive than the goods produced by the nation importing them.
