Timothy McVeigh's trial on murder, conspiracy, and weapons charges did not begin until more than two years after the bombing in Oklahoma City. Due to the massive publicity surrounding the case in Oklahoma City, the judge hearing the case ruled that McVeigh could not receive a fair trial anywhere in Oklahoma and so moved it to Denver, Colorado. McVeigh chose to exercise his right to be tried by a jury of his peers. The trial officially opened with opening arguments by the prosecuting and defense attorneys. Since the government had the burden of proving the charges, it presented its argument first, followed by the defense's opening statement. Opening arguments are not evidence, but simply summarize the facts of the case that each side expects will be presented during testimony.
