Dagobert I dies, having given Austrasia to his son Sigibert in 632, and leaving Neustria (roughly the northwestern part of modern France bounded by the Meuse, the Loire, and the Atlantic) and Burgundy to his son Clovis II. Though members of the Merovingian dynasty continue to rule in name until 751, power passes to nobles known as mayors of the palaces: Ebroin in Neustria and in Austrasia, Pepin I of Landen, founder of what becomes known as the Carolingian dynasty.
