By 1977 disco had already been pumping across American dance floors for more than three years, propelled by number one hits such as the Bee Gees' "Jive Talkin'" and "You Should Be Dancing." But producer Robert Stigwood (best-known for producing Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway in 1971) felt there was still plenty of life left in the popular dance craze. He certainly guessed right when he tapped British-born songsters the Bee Gees to supply the music and television heartthrob John Travolta (popular as Vinnie Barbarino on Welcome Back, Kotter) to star in his dance drama Saturday Night Fever. By the time the film was released in December 1977, the first single, "How Deep Is Your Love," was already number one.
