Cinderella Story

As with so many of the great stories of the world, this film also uses the Cinderella story motif. The Second Mrs. de Winter is working as the handmaid and companion of a rich lady when she meets Maxim. As she and Maxim fall in love, he decides to make her his wife. When she moves from companion to the wife of a rich man, she becomes like the poor Cinderella who marries her prince.

However, Hitchcock adds a twist to the film by making everything not turn out happily ever after. When the Second Mrs. de Winter arrives at Manderley, things begin to go terribly wrong. She expects everyone to love her and welcome her openly, but instead they seem to be offended by her presence.
