The Empusium Overview

In Olga Tokarczuk's novel The Empusium, 24-year-old Mieczysław (Mieczhś) Wojnicz travels to Görbersdorf to stay at the Guesthouse for Gentlemen. Suffering from tuberculosis, Wojnicz hopes that the mountain air will cure his illness. The longer he is in this alpine health resort, however, the more oddities Wojnicz encounters. Witches, spirits, murders, and ghosts threaten Wojnicz's mental well-being while challenging him to question the true parameters of reality. Written from the first person singular point of view, the novel explores themes including identity, social alienation, and misogyny.
