Morris "Morrie" Schwartz (1916-1995) was a professor of sociology at Brandeis University from 1959 until his retirement following getting his Ph.D at the University of Chicago. During that time, he studied the sociology of sickness, death and grief, his interest in which had been spurred by his mother's death when he was a child.
