More Than a Dream: The Radical March on Washington For Jobs and Freedom Overview

More Than a Dream: the Radical March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom is a book of historical nonfiction for middle grade readers written by Yohuru Williams and Michael G. Long. It was published in 2023 and tells the story on the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a march and speaking event that was organized to fight for the rights of Black people and all workers. It includes narration written by Williams and Long as well as numerous photographs and other primary documents. The telling begins as organizers conceptualize and plan the march and carries on through the actual day of the march. Key themes include those included and those excluded from the event, the importance of words, the different ways to fight for civil rights, the various reasons people march, and the difficulty in presenting historical information accurately.

Content Warning: the novel contains racial slurs and outdated language used to describe Black Americans in the 1960s. It also includes a slur against LGBTQ individuals. Race-based violence is depicted and a fake lynching is described. The authors include a description of why they chose the words they did in their introductory material titled “Our Words.” This guide uses abbreviations rather than the words themselves.
