Maizy Chen's Last Chance Overview

Maizy Chen’s Last Chance is middle grade novel of realistic fiction by author Lisa Yee. It is written primarily in the first person from the point of view of the protagonist, Maizy Chen, but there is also an embedded narrative told in the third person by Opa about the Chen family’s ancestors. The story is primarily set in modern day Last Chance, Minnesota where Maizy and her mother temporarily move to help care for Charlotte’s ailing father. There they help with the Chen’s restaurant, The Golden Palace. While there, Maizy gains an increased understanding of the history of Chinese immigration to America. Key themes in the novel are the role that hard work and integrity play in success, the different ways that people respect their history, the way stories preserve culture and fight racism, that things are not always what they seem, and that a person’s story does not begin with themselves.
