“Ma Rainey” is a free-verse poem by African American poet Sterling A. Brown. It first appeared in his debut collection Southern Road in 1932, then later in his Collected Poems in 1980. The poem describes an experience of seeing a concert by blues singer Ma Rainey and explores the prevalence of blues music in the Black American tradition.
