Falling Short Overview

Standing Tall is a work of contemporary middle grade realistic fiction written by Ernesto Cisneros. It was published in 2022. The novel is told from the alternating first person perspectives of the protagonists, Marco Honeyman and Isaac Castillo. The novel centers around the boys’ friendship as well as their mutual desire to win a basketball tournament. Isaac, as a natural athlete, attempts to help Marco learn to play basketball. Central conflicts in the novel include Marco’s desire to excel at something he is not good at in order to impress his father, and Isaac’s desire to keep his father’s drinking from his mother and other adults in his life. Key themes include the importance of playing to one’s own strengths, the necessity of second chances, the importance of the father-son bond, the value of putting other people’s needs ahead of one’s own at times, and the dangers of uncontrolled alcohol abuse.
