Clytemnestra Overview

Costanza Casati's Clytemnestra is a feminist retelling of the famous Greek myth of Clytemnestra, the murderous queen of Mycenae. Clytemnestra is a Spartan princess who grows up to be a powerful and vengeful queen. In her young adulthood, she has everything taken from her by the cruel king Agamemnon, who desires her as his wife. He stops at nothing to take her as his own, even killing her husband and children to get his way. Clytemnestra will go to any lengths in her quest for revenge against those who have harmed her and her loved ones, especially Agamemnon. Despite her tale being framed in Greek myth for centuries as a story of a bitter and evil queen, Casati's novel presents a new look at the story, depicting complex and sympathetic woman who wants justice in a world dominated by violent men.
