Bystander, a young adult novel by James Preller, deals with both bullying and the dangers of complacency through the story of Eric Hayes, the new seventh grader at Bellport Central Middle School. Eric is befriended by Griffin Connelly, a charismatic, popular student who promises Eric protection. When Eric attempts to stand up to Griffin, Eric becomes Griffin’s target. Themes in the novel include the role of the bystander, the impact of mental illness on a family, and the role of music in dealing with problems.
