Summary

Lady Midnight meets with Vasya and tells her she can only travel through midnight by imagining where she wants to be and walking until she gets there. Sleeping, however, will pull her out. Vasya asks Pozhar to leader her to Morozko’s horse and promises not to ride her. Ded Grib believes Vasya can make the chyerti real while the Bear will only making them angry. They all walk together through the darkness and Ded Grib says there used to be cities of men on the border that lived in harmony with the chyerti. Vasya says they can live together again.

The group comes across a camp where Vasya learns that the river king plans to kill the men. She rushes to the camp to warn them, saving the horses as the water...
