Summary

Pages 53 - 75 -- After the celestial storm, Jacob and his family start their day as usual. Jim Stolfutz arrives in the morning with news of a massive power outage. Jacob goes to the Sorensons' house to learn more, and other members of the community are there, as well. All of their English neighbors have no power, and are unable to use their vehicles. That night fires burn in the distance, and there are no lights from any of the towns or cities.

Jacob is visited by Joseph Fisher, who tells him that Dr. Fisher said "everything in town was a mess, and nothing was working" (59). The next morning Jacob and his son help with the harvest at the Michaelsons' farm, along with other members of the community.
