Summary

Chapter 1 – Mustin watches one of the abbies – humanoid creatures (descendants of human beings) which populate the wilds of the world – move around the land outside of the electric fence through the scope of his sniper rifle. If the creature scales the canyon wall and gets past the fence, Mustin will have to call for backup. He takes a shot at the creature, misses, shoots again, and hits the thing. He then looks at the town, at how beautiful and peaceful Wayward Pines is – and how none of the people in town have any idea what goes on in the outside world. He sees Sheriff Ethan Burke walking up the street.
