Tarwater begins to find his way out of the woods and finds himself at a highway where he gets a ride from a truck driver. The driver needs Tarwater to talk so that he can stay awake and drive. Tarwater is hesitant at first but eventually tells the trucker about baptizing Bishop at the same time that he drowned him. Tarwater tells the trucker that he had only meant to drown Bishop, not baptize him, because no man can be born again.
Tarwater tells the man that he is going back to Mason's shack, and he is never going to leave again. The only reason Tarwater left in the first place was to prove that he is not a prophet. Now that his mission is completed, Tarwater will return to Mason's.....
