Drum Analysis

This poem displays Hughes characteristic preoccupation with death. Note that death is not uniformly dreaded in Hughes' poetry. The drum may not be a joyful one, but neither is it mournful. Death is an irresistible force and an inescapable reality. The last two words of the poem are a drum-like representation of death's call.
