Summary

Chapter 56 opens in the year 1980. Ijeoma is eight months pregnant with Chibundu’s child. She goes to a church to pray for God to take away her homosexual urges. Chibundu coincidentally arrives and asks Ijeoma why she is praying. Ijeoma says that she has committed a sin, but before she can say more, Chibundu interrupts her. He says that he does not believe in church doctrine, and he says that whatever Ijeoma’s perceived sin is, he loves her all the same. As Ijeoma and Chibundu leave the church, Ijeoma does not feel very comforted, as she still bears no romantic love for Chibundu. In Chapter 57, the narrative shifts back to Ijeoma’s wedding night. Feeling no attraction to Chibundu, she refuses to have sex with him. However, the next night, she feels trapped and feels that she can not resist her husband’s...
