Summary

In the Prologue, an unnamed girl worries about joining a new group. While she does like them, she struggles to match their faces with their names and misses her old friends. However, she pretends they are her friends and listens to all of their stories. On this particular day, she is riding in an SUV when men with guns drive up behind them. The driver of the SUV tries to speed up, but runs off the road and crashes.

Chapter One starts with an unnamed narrator who is later referred to as Gabe. He hates that the older man is obsessed with trying to lecture him, as Gabe is not interested in feeling like a child. He tells the reader that he used to have a steady paycheck running a snowlift in the area, but there has not been snow...
