Queen Anne

Queen Anne is married to King Louis XIII. She is originally from Spain, and is unhappy and unsettled as queen of France. She is still loyal to her Spanish origins, but wants to feel secure as queen; and she is in love with an Englishman, the Duke of Buckingham. The King knows she doesn't love him and he doesn't trust her. The Cardinal hates her.

Athos

Athos is the leader of the Musketeers, partly because he is older than the others, but also because he is highly intelligent and brave and is a phenomenal fighter. He carries a secret sorrow and is usually melancholy. Later in the book he reveals that he was born a noble lord and once fell in love with a beautiful girl of sixteen, who seemed pure and devoted, who had moved to the area with her brother, a priest.
