Summary

It is 1891, and eleven years have passed since the death of Mrs. Partiger. Kitty is introduced as "Kitty Lasswade"; she has married a Lord of that name, and they have a child. Moving from the north of England to Devonshire in the south, we find that Milly has married Hugh Gibbs, the university friend of her brother, Edward. We also discover that Morris is now a practicing lawyer.

At Abercorn Terrace, Eleanor is doing chores and helping out her father at home. They discuss Morris, who Eleanor plans to visit at the law courts later in the day. The Colonel says he will stop off at the home of his brother, Digby, and his family later on; as it is his niece's birthday, he asks Eleanor to buy her a present on his behalf.
