Ben runs off into the woods. He is very distressed about what the police are implying - that he might have harmed Calli. He would never do that. He was always a mild type of guy, but one day he was struggling with math problems at school. Jason Meechum called him a retard several times, and it tipped Ben over the edge. He threw his chalk at the bully, hitting him right between his eyes. When he ran home after the incident, his mother comforted him. At school Jason and his friends taunted Ben saying that his mom was sleeping with the sheriff. Ben threatened Jason when he caught him alone, but denied doing so after Jason reported the incident.
