Sea beast

Most of The Swallowed Man takes place within the belly of an unknown sea beast. Geppetto is swallowed by the beast and discovers he can somehow survive within its body. He finds the remains of a ship, the Maria, and the supplies onboard allow him to live. The loneliness, darkness, and inhospitable conditions of the ship cause Geppetto to reminisce at length about his past and his relationship with his son, Pinocchio. Though Geppetto attempts to escape at times, he mostly resigns himself to his life within the beast.

The Maria

Geppetto finds a swallowed ship, the Maria, inside the sea beast's belly, and he lives upon this ship for the duration of his captivity.
