Everand and Heloise are visiting an Italian church, looking at the image of Sacra Conversazione. They continue to talk about their youth, she about her mother's and her aunt's house and Everand about being a soldier. They always avoid mention of Lahardane. Everand, however, has secretly been writing to Lahardane. But he does not send the letters. He is afraid that it will lead to a correspondence, which would be a betrayal in his marriage. So he writes, stamps, and hides it away. That night, Heloise lies next to her husband, euphoric after a full day, and she resolves to tell.....
