Chapter Twelve Summary

In Chapter Twelve, Rose reaches Reginer's chateau in time to see the king and queen arrive for their visit. Desiree has brought the couple a drink which she claims to be a family-recipe. Rose knows the concoction is poisonous. Doing what she can to protect her family, Rose runs into the stable, disturbing a small dog. She worries the dog to a frenzy, causing those in the house to come out to see what the matter is. Desiree follows Reginer to the stables. She stays outside while he goes inside. When her mother joins her, she jokes about killing the dog as well. Although they realize Jean-Marc is gullible, Ombrine has noticed Reginer looking at them strangely as if they suspect something. Claire walks out to meet the two women at the stable. She tells them the dog got loose and...
