Summary

In Chapter 11, Cem and Mahmut continue to work, but they still have not struck water. One evening, Cem goes into town and sees the Red-Haired Woman in a restaurant. He stands in the doorway and watches her for a few minutes before being forced out of the establishment by a pugnacious waiter.

In Chapter 12, Cem and Mahmut still find no water, but Cem is comforted by Mahmut’s company and his stories. Cem thinks, “My father would never have paid so much attention to me.

In Chapter 13, Hayri Bey arrives at the well site and says that if they do not find water in three days, he will no longer finance the digging of the well. That evening Cem sees the woman in town again and realizes that she is an actress in the Theater of Morality Tales.
