Amy Harper Bellafonte

Amy Harper Bellafonte is the heroine of the novel. As a six-year-old girl, Amy was given a virus by the U.S. Army that gave her a long life span, the ability to heal quickly, and the ability to hear and reason with the virals. Even before Amy was infected with the virus, others could sense there was something different about her. Sister Arnette believed Amy was evil because Amy was the daughter of a prostitute. Lacey, on the other hand, believed that God had a special purpose for Amy. When Lacey took Amy to the zoo, she noticed the way the animals reacted to Amy. Amy told Lacey that she believed that the animals knew what she was, a knowledge that seemed to cause Amy sadness and pain.
