Summary

Chapter 1 – Nineteen year-old Ceony Twill, graduate of the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, is disappointed to learn that the material she has been assigned to use for her magical practice is paper. She had hoped to be a Smelter, using metals instead. Magician Patrice Aviosky at Tagis explains that with only 12 working in paper in England, there aren’t enough Folders. Ceony is then sent to study with Magician Emery Thane on the River Thames. He lives on the outskirts of London in a dilapidated mansion. Avisoky tells Ceony not to trust her eyes. Touching the front gate, the house is transformed into a beautiful smaller home with beautiful gardens with paper flowers. A paper skeleton named Jonto greets them at the door, scaring Ceony.
