America Singer

America is the narrative's main character. She is one of the Elite, but is different from the others in that she comes from a lower caste. Even though she is now a 3, the fact that she grew up as a 5 is a point that she does not forget and often references in the narrative. She has known hunger, however, she is a survivor. She survives her life as a 5 and she survives the Selection and becomes the queen. This is both in spite of and because of her impulsive, feisty character and her desire to do help people. She has doubts that her character will make her a good princess and she is a feminist who fights against being treated as a commodity. This last fact contributes to the symbolism of the title.
