Summary

The story begins at the funeral of Mrs. Carr who had succumbed to cancer after only 10 months. Mrs. Carr was the mother of Shea Rigsby's best friend, Lucy, as well as Shea's mother's best friend. Before she died, Mrs. Carr had stated that she wanted Shea to marry her son, Lawton, but that was totally out of the question for Shea. Shea prays for the Carr family including Mrs. Carr's husband, Coach Carr, the legendary football coach at Walker University, in Walker, Texas. Shea recalls the fond memories she has of the Coach when she and Lucy were young girls and Shea spent so much time at the Carrs' home and learning all about football from the Coach. Lucy never cared for football and this set her apart from the relationship Shea had with the Coach. Shea notes how good the Coach looks...
