Summary

The introduction states that a man from Delhi, India and a man from Yukon, Canada fell in love, and became best friends with another couple, a woman from Jamaica and a Mohawk woman. The two couples had a baby together. They won the lottery, quit working, bought a mansion in Toronto, Canada they called 'Camelottery', and had seven adopted or biological children. The children are each named after trees, and they call their parents PapaDum, PopCorn, MaxiMom, and CardaMom.

Chapter One is told from the third-person limited perspective of Sumac, a nine-year-old and the fifth-oldest child in the family. At the story's opening, Sumac is making oatmeal in the family's kitchen, which they call the Mess.
