Chapter Nine: Meghan and Puck make their way from the lodge to the edge of the wyldwood, where the snow and ice abruptly stop. Meghan hopes Ash will come after her, but he does not. A tree woman, a dryad, collapses near them and asks for help. She is thin, with moss-green skin and hair like vines. She explains that her tree has been poisoned, then she dies. Her body turns into brittle branches. Puck places her body near the base of a tree and its roots pull her underground. Soon Meghan and Puck see that part of the wyldwood is dying, overrun by living metal lampposts and wires growing amongst the other...
